NBA Player Greivis Vasquez Visits New Orleans School to Promote Healthy Habits

NEW ORLEANS HORNETS’ GREIVIS VASQUEZ TO VISIT LOCAL SCHOOL TO PROMOTE HEALTHY HABITS AND END CHILDHOOD OBESITY

New Orleans’ Esperanza Charter School Will Receive Advice on Nutritious Eating and Benefits of Physical Activity from Professional Athlete Greivis Vasquez

What:

Greivis Vasquez, point guard for the New Orleans’ Hornets, will visit Esperanza Charter School, a public school in New Orleans, to rally students and staff to continue cultivating a healthy school environment and to promote healthy habits on an individual level, including eating nutritious meals and participating in regular exercise.

Esperanza Charter School is a member of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program and is working to make significant changes in the areas of school meals, physical activity and staff wellness. Esperanza has been improving its nutrition programs and even held a taste test of healthy snacks, fruits, and nuts. The school maintains a vegetable garden which is a fun activity for students and provides an opportunity to teach students about the importance of eating healthy items like fruits and vegetables. Esperanza’s staff members are modeling healthy habits for students by participating in energizing group events like walkathons.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation was founded by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation to reverse the trend of childhood obesity. The Wasserman Foundation, a private family foundation based in Los Angeles collaborates with the Alliance by providing professional athletes to promote healthy habits and combat childhood obesity. As part of this joint effort, NBA players and U.S. Olympic athletes have previously visited schools in Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Memphis, and Palm Springs.
